Innovative mapping
I have had a Garmin Edge 800 for 6 months now and the more I use it the more I become comfortable with what it can offer but also more frustrated with numerous aspects of it. I bought the cover as I felt it would add some more protection but it seems waterproof. The battery will work for approximately 12 hours and will cease to work quite abruptly; around the time when you are cycling in the dark trying to find a specific place. It uses a standard mini USB and the charging takes about an hour.
First you need to define how you plan to use the GPS (car, cycle or walk) as this has an impact upon what route the GPS will provide. The default for me was road so the first time I used it I couldn't understand why it wasn't finding any of the obvious cycle tracks.
Second you need to use it as often as possible before you set out on a serious ride. This isn't a TomTom for the car where you turn on and go. The more you use before the big ride the more useful and less useless it will...

very useful satnev
This is not the simplest product to use initially, but with plenty of practice and time it becomes second nature. With the Discoverer mapping you'll find that down to the limitations of the computer technology used to produce them it is not 100% accurate and for those of you who don't spend a lot of time on track ways and bridleways you'll find that rights of way don't often follow where the paths go.
I love this GPS and have used it on cycle rides and when walking and have found it to be an advantage to paper maps when in windy and wet conditions.
Very recommended.
